Writing for Non-Writers
“How do I write an article?” This is the most common question asked by people who don’t consider themselves writers, along with utterances like “but I’m not good with grammar, I’ve never taken writing lessons, I’m not very creative, I don’t have any good ideas…” and the list goes on.
The truth is, writing isn’t that scary and writing a well-informed article geared towards your audience isn’t hard. Want to know the secret?
Write about what you know.
When in doubt, think about your unique experiences, the number of years you’ve been in your industry, everything you’ve learned…you are, in fact, a goldmine of information. So your first step in writing is sharing what you know with prospective clients to engage them and promote interaction.
Don’t worry about things like grammar; just write as if you’re talking to someone. You can have someone edit it for you later, and if you’re using word, the spell check is priceless.
In highly competitive industries, everyone is searching for the best way to stand out and create a steady flow of good content, from video and text to podcasts. So think about this: people searching for something in your industry WANT to know about it.
They’re searching for the best information possible to make an educated decision about which product or service is best for them. Its simple math: by engaging them through your knowledge and giving them what they want, you’re creating strong relationships with potential clients and positioning yourself as an authority in your industry.
After all, who better to help them than you?
With years of experience in your industry, you can help your readers and potential clients find what they want, when they need it, just as you do in every-day interactions offline. Approach any creation of content the same way you would approach a potential client and keep in mind the audience for whom you’re writing.
Tip: if you don’t know where to begin, record yourself talking and play it back for yourself. You’ll get great article ideas just by listening to what you said!
