What is a Meme?

1

A meme is a unit of cultural information, a viral idea transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one place to another. As in nature, Memes spread successfully, mutate or wither out and die. Only the fittest Memes are left alive…

For those of us plugged in to the pulse of the web, Memes have become analogous to internet quizzes, surveys, captioned pictures, games and other ideas people link to and pass around through their blog or social networks.

A group on a little forum starts captioning pictures of cats and suddenly the meme of lol cats is born. A cool quiz is created and spreads as people pass it along.

Meme is pretty much an umbrella term to describe the idea that is passed along, whether its a funny way to caption pictures, a term (e.g. Web 2.0), a game or any number of other myriad actions or ideas.
